Rural Farmhouse Reimagined

A Country House Revival in Northland

A Large Shaker Kitchen Framed by Sea and Sky

This Northland renovation was about contrast — preserving an idyllic rural setting while completely reimagining the home within it.

Jan and Geoff purchased a run-down farmhouse in rural Northland, captivated by its spectacular coastal outlook. The sea-side vista hadn’t changed in decades — but the house itself needed vision, refinement and care.

Their brief was to bring their Waiheke Island style to this tired yet beautiful property. Clean lines, simplicity, warmth and understated elegance would replace dated finishes and awkward layouts.

A Kitchen Designed Around the View

At the heart of the renovation sits a generous shaker-style kitchen — designed to anchor the home without competing with the landscape beyond the windows.

The approach was intentional:

  • A simple, restrained colour palette

  • Classic shaker cabinetry for timeless structure

  • Farmhouse sink positioned to capture the outlook

  • Large island for gathering and entertaining

  • Black hardware to add quiet definition

  • Stone surfaces that feel grounded and enduring

Rather than overpowering the space with bold materials, we allowed the view to speak for itself. The cabinetry provides calm structure; the landscape delivers the drama.

A Whole-Home Revival

This project formed part of a full interior and exterior renovation done by the client. While we led the kitchen, the transformation extended across the entire house, inside and out.

The result is a home that now feels cohesive, intentional and deeply connected to its surroundings.

What was once a tired farmhouse is now a refined country retreat — simple, elegant and anchored by Northland’s beautiful coastal outlooks.
